Reds thrash Canaries in season opener

Liverpool's quest to win its first Premier League title in 30 years got off to a brilliant start, with the Reds opening the new season with a 4-1 thrashing of Norwich City at Anfield.

The hosts were on the score sheet after just seven minutes when Grant Hanley's lapse in concentration resulted in an own goal.

Liverpool doubled its lead on 19 minutes when Firmino set up Mo Salah, who fired into the bottom corner.

Virgil van Dijk's header from a Mo Salah corner found the back of the net nine minutes later to extend the lead to three, and when Divock Origi's header beat Tim Krul nearing half-time, the flood gates were well and truly open.

The Canaries got one back on 64 minutes when Teemu Pukki was too good for goalkeeper Alisson, who came on for Adrián late in the first half after the Spanish stopper rolled his right ankle.

The Reds failed to score in the second half, but they will be content with taking all three points.

Liverpool finished runners-up last season, just one point behind champions Manchester City.
