23 Sep Messi beats rivals to FIFA Player of the Year award
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been crowned FIFA Player of the Year for a record sixth time.
Messi took out the award on 46 votes ahead of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk (38) and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo (36).
The Argentine contributed a phenomenal 51 goals and 22 assists in all competitions last season, leading Barca to a fourth La Liga title in five seasons.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was named coach of the year after guiding the club to a sixth Champions League title and a 97-point season in the Premier League.
Reds shot stopper Alisson was named goal keeper of the year.
