01 Oct Melbourne Victory name new captain for upcoming season
Melbourne Victory have named Ola Toivonen as their new captain ahead of the upcoming A-League season.
The Swedish striker will become the fifth player to captain the club and the first overseas player to hold the position in an official capacity.
Toivonen will be joined in the club’s leadership group by club stalwart Leigh Broxham, 22-year-old defender Thomas Deng, as well as new international signings Tim Hoogland and Jakob Poulsen.
“Firstly, I want to thank the players and coaches for selecting me to captain Melbourne Victory this season,” Toivonen told melbournevictory.com.au.
“It’s an honour to have been chosen to lead this club, I loved my first season here and am very proud to now be in this position.
“I am passionate about achieving success and together with the support of the leadership group in Leigh, Jakob, Tim and Tommy to drive the team to a good place.
“We have put together a tremendous group of players and we are all looking forward to Round 1 next week.”

Toivonen’s first game with the armband will be a derby against Melbourne City at Marvel Stadium on October 12.
