Muscat saddened by Postecoglou’s Socceroos exit

Kevin Muscat is saddened by the manner of Ange Postecoglou’s acrimonious exit as Socceroos coach.

Since quitting as Australia boss before the 2018 World Cup, Postecoglou took charge of relegation threatened Yokohama F. Marinos and has transformed the J-League side into title contenders.

With three games remaining, Yokohama sit one point off top spot and within sight of a first league title since 2004.

“I’m really pleased for Ange and what he is doing in Japan,” Muscat told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“For me it’s a little bit sour because I keep thinking what if we as a nation – and a lot of people in this country have a lot to answer for – believed where could we be as a national team now?

“What type of football could we be playing if we showed that belief? Unfortunately, we didn’t and it’s someone else’s gain.

“I watched the game and then watched some footage after the game of how appreciated he is over there in Japan and it makes me a little bit sad to be honest.”

Muscat feels Postecoglou was driven out of the job by certain people with “too many agendas”.

“It was one person with a vision and many without one,” Muscat said.

“In the end it was too many people with agendas. That’s what makes me sad about it because as a nation I could see us developing into playing some attractive football in my eyes.”

Postecoglou led the Socceroos to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil before guiding
Australia to Asian Cup glory on home soil in 2015.
