Former Arsenal manager Wenger lands new job

Arsene Wenger has been appointed FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development.

Wenger, 70, was recently linked with vacant manager’s position at Bayern Munich, but later confirmed he was “never a candidate”.

The Frenchman's 22-year stint in charge of Premier League club Arsenal came to an end in 2018.

He won three Premier League titles – including an unbeaten season in 2003/04 – and seven FA Cups during his time with the Gunners.

The role will focus on coach education by encouraging former players to step into management. Wenger will also be a "leading authority on technical matters" and have a say in potential law changes, according to FIFA.

"I very much look forward to taking on this extremely important challenge, not only because I have always been interested in analysing football from a broader perspective, but also because FIFA's mission as world football's governing body is truly global,” Wenger said in a statement.

"I believe that the new FIFA we have seen emerging in recent years has the sport itself at the very heart of its objectives and is determined to develop the game in its many different components.

"I know I can contribute to this objective and will put all my energy into this."
