Daniel Arzani was “ill-advised” joining Celtic: Socceroos great

Daniel Arzani was “ill-advised” joining Celtic and a move to Scotland was the “wrong move for him”, according to Socceroos great Mark Schwarzer.

A serious knee injury has restricted Arzani to just two senior appearances since joining the Glasgow giants on a two-year loan deal from parent club Manchester City.

Speaking on Optus Sport’s Two Sharp Reds podcast, Schwarzer felt a switch to Germany or Holland would have better suited the 21-year-old who announced himself at the 2018 World Cup for the Socceroos.

“For Daniel Arzani, I think he was ill-advised,” Schwarzer said.

“Yes, he has been out injured so forget that, but (the) beginning part I think he struggled. He got injured in his very first game. But before that, it took him ages to get in there because apparently – he wasn’t up to speed.

"Celtic are not the type of team that was going to suit Daniel Arzani in my opinion.

“He’s a very gifted technical player, a player that loves to get the ball at his feet and run at opposition, but as a ball-playing player he needs other intelligent players around him.

“So, I would have thought his best move would have been a place either like Germany, (or) in Holland.

“They play a more technical based game of football and they also give a lot of young players opportunities. So, I always said, I think the Celtic move is the wrong move for him.”

Arzani is set to return to City once his loan deal expires at the end of the season.
