14 Mar "This will go on for months": Premier League season suspended
The Premier League season has been suspended until at least April 3 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Fixtures were scheduled to go ahead as planned but an emergency meeting was called after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi both tested positive to COVID-19.
Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers revealed three of his players were suffering from flu-like symptoms while an ill family member forced Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy into isolation.
All games in the EFL, Women's Super League and Women's Championship, as well as Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have also been postponed.
“Above all, we wish Mikel Arteta and Callum Hudson-Odoi speedy recoveries, and everyone else affected by COVID-19,” Premier League CEO Richard Masters said in a statement.
"In this unprecedented situation, we are working closely with our clubs, government, the FA and EFL and can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority."
A senior Premier League club source told Sky Sports there’s a “75 per cent chance” the season won’t be completed.
“I can’t see any chance we will be back in three weeks. This will go on for months and you wonder even about the start of next season,” the source said.
“I’d say there is a 75 per cent chance the season will not be completed. There are huge questions to answer. Does anybody get promoted or relegated?”
“Many clubs in all four divisions will struggle financially.”
Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League and just two wins away from their first league title in 30 years.
